Implementation of a Feature-based Gesture Recognizer with Application to a Physically-based Bird Animation System

| We describe our initial progress in developing gesture-based tools for real{time animation choreography. We outline the important characteristics of our aerodynamic bird ight model, used as the basis for a bird character, our single-sensor gesture recognition system, and the techniques used to couple the two systems to put the bird under interactive gestural control. The gesture system recognizes a small set of parameterized arm gestures, and outputs commands consisting of both single gestures and multiple gesture sequences. Since the bird model is physically based, and responds to commands through a multiple-level control system, the eeect is that of a director working with an intelligent actor to choreograph motion sequences.
